Profile

Michael Murphy lives opposite the island of Arran on the North Ayrshire coast of Scotland and this is a daily inspiration for much of his work, although the passages of light and texture in the seascapes of Scotland in general are of constant fascination to him.

He says: “My work is about the drama of the sky, and together with the comforting straightness of the horizon line, these provide the framework for a semi abstract goldfish bowl of colour leaving the viewer with an appreciation of Scotland, which, I feel, only the swirling flow of paint can provide so memorably”.

Another very large Arran Sescape - the deep orange is quite atmospheric.

Adjustments to Saltcoats demo painting

I have doctored up the beach t take the eye way into the distance. Also, I have 'watered and foamed' up the surf with the sand and surf.  I put liquin on first.  It dried very quickly although people say that Liquin is not a drying agent per say.  I will have to cover the whole piece with a thin film of liquin to unify it now though.

Cuninghame Art Society Demonstration Feb 2011

There are areas of the painting which I am satisfied with and some not at all.  I will typically look at it for a few days and ideas will come into my head well before the paint has dried - meaning that I can adjust until happy.  I will post these as and when they happen.

I had a lovely time with your club and hope to be asked back again in the future.  Thank you very much for checking out my site.
